Akif Nomani is an experienced and trusted workplace investigator, well-versed in the administrative law principles which form the basis of a properly conducted investigation, particularly with respect to procedural fairness and natural justice. Akif works as a neutral in conducting impartial and objective investigations into a broad range of allegations which arise in the workplace context, whether involving employees only, or customers/clients/students of the employer entity as well. Akif works diligently to complete investigations thoroughly and in a timely manner, while minimally interfering with the workplace. Akif concludes investigations with the issuance of detailed written reports, including full evidence analyses and explanations for findings made, including credibility assessments, and the identification of potential areas of liability or risk.

Akif joined Mortimer Khoraych PC having developed a practice focused on institutional and workplace investigations early in his legal career. Akif was previously a member of the Correctional Services Oversight and Investigations Unit with the Ministry of the Solicitor General, conducting complex investigations into allegations of significant violations of Ministry policies, rules, and procedures. In this capacity, Akif investigated allegations as diverse as sexual harassment, conflict of interest, workplace violence/use of force, in-custody deaths, abuse of power, and on and off-duty misconduct, amongst other matters. These investigations presented many procedural and substantive challenges, often involving high-profile matters. Akif worked with and engaged a variety of impacted parties and stakeholders, including Ministry management, employees, union representatives and clients, all while maintaining his independence and impartiality.

Akif articled at the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario, where he worked closely with coroner’s counsel in preparing for Inquests, including participating in policy and planning meetings, and negotiating and drafting inquest recommendations. Akif has also appeared before a Coroner’s Inquest in Ontario.
